Michigan Senator Michele Hoitenga, representing the Thirty-Six District of Michigan, initiated the recognition of the Houghton Lake Council of the Knights of Columbus’ award from the State of Michigan. Signatures on the document besides Senator Hoitenga are Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lieutenant Governor Garland Gilchrist, and Ken Horton Michigan State Representative of the one hundred and fifth district. STORY LINE:
The Knights of Columbus of Houghton Lake, MI are recognized with an award for supporting Coor Intermediate Schools, Special Olympics and ROOC workshop since 1976. The proceeds generated by the Council’s yearly sales of Tootsie Rolls has amounted to over $100,000 for the needs of COOR, Special Olympics and the ROOC workshop over the last forty-eight years. The Knight’s Council recently celebrated 50 years of their founding in 1974. The Knight’s support over fourteen different charities in the greater Roscommon community area.
Larry Meier, a knight of this council, was the director at ROOC and was instrumental in starting the ROOC workshop with a matching grant and the support of the Houghton Lake Knights in 1977. Knight Larry was instrumental in starting the Special Olympics at that time.
