Freddie Mercury wrote the song while languishing in his bath at the Munich Hilton. He leapt from the tub and ran to his guitar and piano to lay down the melody. His label was reluctant to release the song in the U.S. but radio stations played the imported U.K. single anyway, forcing an American release.

When I was little my dad used to joke that he married my mom for her record collection. My parents both grew up in the city in Philadelphia. They came from hard-working families and they did not have a lot of material possessions, and what they had did not come easily. My mom talked a lot about how she would use a portion of her babysitting money to save for record albums. Growing up we always played music and danced a lot at home. Even when things were tight we had a stereo and there was always something good on. I remember on the weekends when we would clean the house my dad always played different records, from Broadway shows to Michael Jackson to Abba, so growing up like that, how could I not love music? Motown, all Motown, was played often in the Levin household. The music just becomes a part of who you are when you hear it all the time. I think that is why I am open to working on so many different formats in imaging today, because my parents exposed us with such enthusiasm to so much when we were young.

I love, love, love doing Classic Hits! Since I grew up listening to 80s music, it really resonates with me! I also love having fun with the sarcasm and humor of the Adults Hits channels. In my family my husband is the one with the dry, whitty humor, but on air I can assume that role and it is fun for me to engage with the scripts and move away from the rah rah party girl. Just this week I also got to do a set of liners for an Oldies station for the first time! Since that is the music my folks always played growing up, it was not just happy work, but particularly meaningful to me too.

I think that life is short and you have to do what you love. I have always loved music, and I have a true passion for voiceover. Working in Radio Imaging feels so natural because so much of who I am inside can just flow when I am in front of the mic. I am so thankful for each and every station that I work with!

To counter this impact, SMG Radio has developed its own radio app. It has also launched training courses to improve the professionalism of its radio hosts and editors, and started working more closely with sponsors to produce more effective ads and achieve better commercial placement.

How would you categorise all of this? Is it okay to have your Old Recurrent list spanning 10 years of music, or do we need to separate them out a bit more? Do we categorise it based on how much of a great song it is, or how old it is?

The more song categories you have, the more format clocks you need, which is luckily very easy when you have a main format clock with several different variants that you then alternately schedule in a rotating clock grid. You can find more information in a previous article about Contemporary Hit Radio music scheduling & format clocks. I hope this is helpful for now, but do let us know if you have any more questions about music categories for your music scheduling.

Making its debut in 1982 as a single station in Rocklin, California, K-LOVE Radio grew from humble beginnings into a nationally heard radio station with over 20 million listeners a week. Today, K-LOVE is the largest Christian radio network in the United States and the second largest radio network of any genre. NRB congratulates K-LOVE on 40 years of excellence in Christian communications.

K-LOVE and Air1 combine music and ministry, providing listeners with community, connection, answers, and prayer in between songs. Personal stories from real listeners demonstrate what sets K-LOVE apart for its listeners:

Prince has always dreamed of becoming a DJ and falling in love. But being the main caretaker for his mother, who has multiple sclerosis, and his little brother means his dreams will stay just that and the only romances in his life are the ones he hears about from his listeners.

Not only has radio not died on its arse, but it actually seems to be thriving. At the end of last year, Ebiquity research found a third of advertisers were planning to invest more in radio in 2021, equating to the highest net shift for any traditional medium.

Secondly, radio removes or solves the effort of content selection. Anyone who has fruitlessly scrolled through the Netflix or Amazon Prime menus on a Saturday night looking for a decent film will be familiar with this issue.

What this demonstrates is something quite profound. Our lives have been emphatically time-stamped by the music we hear collectively on the radio. This happens because radio, even today, still has a unique ability to take a song from obscurity, make it familiar and then elevate it to broad popularity.

The numbers tell one story about K-LOVE, the Christian radio network that started at a single station in Santa Rosa 40 years ago and has mushroomed into a coast-to-coast service that reaches a reported 20 million listeners per week.

The combination of music and ministry has paid off handsomely for K-LOVE, which is now based in Rocklin, outside Sacramento, but is planning to eventually move near Nashville, the capital of the contemporary Christian music world.

Part of it also has to do with the emerging quality of the music, says Kelli Caldwell, who has worked at K-LOVE for 16 years and co-hosts the mid-day show with Smith. Contemporary Christian music production is remarkably more sophisticated than in past years and matches what you hear in other formats.

Yesterday, on June 30 2021, Belvie Rooks and I had the joy of being on a weekly radio show hosted by TJ and Taj Jackson, and the DeeDee Jackson Foundation, which was created in honor of their mother who was murdered when they were young. The foundation helps people, especially children, to heal from traumatic losses through music therapy.

I usually feel more of a connection to the female main character in romances for obvious reasons, but in Love Radio, Prince was my clear favorite. He was the absolute sweetest. I loved his interactions with his mom and little brother, his dedication to his DJing job, and his courtesy towards Dani.

Throughout the night, guests participated in an interactive game themed after a turntable, and using skills acquired from a swing dance coach who taught on-site before the party, danced in rhythm appreciating the music in fullness.

Our Alternative Love Blueprint celebrates over 300 musicians, artists, managers and producers who (in our opinion) have been pivotal to the evolution of the alternative and independent music scene, from Bill Hayley & His Comets whose 1950s Rock Around the Clock became the first ever anthem for a rebellious youth, through to experimental rock bands Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead.
