For the Internship requirement of the program I reached out to several archives specializing in textile and costume. Middle Tennessee State University's Textile Merchandising and Apparel Design (MTSU TXMD) houses a Historic Costume Collection (HCC). This collection has garments as far back as the 1790s and as current as the late 2010s. The collection was in desparate need of someone with a collections management background and interest in textiles. I inventoried, cataloged and created a digital inventory of the collection alongside supervising a mission and vision statement and creating an updated handling practices for the collection. The most exciting aspect of this internship was helping create an exhibition for the collection.
This group project saw the creation for a interpretation plan for Longview Mansion in Nashville. This Mansion has a storied history and is currently owned by Lipscomb University. They reached out to the Center for Historic Preservation asking for help as Lipscomb knew they had an important building but no future plan for it. This project remedied that. I looked into the material culture of the house, the family members present during the 20th century and finally multiple proposals for future use of the house.
For a Collections Management Project I worked alongside another student to create collections management policies for the State Park Service. These were formatted as "White Pages," a format known to the park service similar to the National Parks Service's Technical pamphlets. These offered insight on best practices and policies for spaces that are not archival quality and managed by people without a collections management background. These white pages met theory with reality and helped those without proper facilities or training to better care for artifacts and documents in their collections.
For my archives management class I was assigned a collection to process in the Albert Gore Research Center. This collection ended up becoming the Charles Jacobus Papers. A WWII veteran, professional baker and smyrna resident, these papers reflect his time in the Navy and his life after being honorably discharged. Notably this collection contained every sort of media outside digitally born.
During July of 2024 I was fortunate enough to be able to take the Historic Preservation abroad program. This surveyed the United Kingdom's Heritage system and the pros and cons of the agency as compared to something like the United States' National Park Service. This program looked at monuments, historic sites, heritage spaces and even conducted an archaeology dig.
My most recent project consisted of creating a Historic Preservation plan for Leiper's Fork. This small town a few minutes from Franklin, TN and 30-40 minutes from Nashville is beginning to experience the flood of tourists and people moving to the area from out of state. This plan seeks to preserve aspects of the community that members deem most important and working alongside them figure out how to preserve the cultural landscape Leipers Fork has maintained for decades. This is a still a working document and cannot be widely circulated while it is under review by the Leiper's Fork Community.
