The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, established in 1931 by Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, is a premier institution dedicated to research, teaching, and application in statistics, natural sciences, and social sciences. Originally emerging from the Statistical Laboratory at Presidency College, Kolkata, ISI has grown into a multidisciplinary center of excellence. It was recognized as an Institute of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959 and continues to play a pioneering role in advancing statistical theory, data science, and interdisciplinary research in India and beyond.
