This page goes over JPCC'S teaching and learning process. This process is done every three months or more,
depending on the needs of each individual child. This process is a partnership between families and myself.
Assessment
Every three months, the family completes an Ages and Stages Questionnaire that relates to the child's age. I score the questionnaire and discuss the results with the family. These scores will determine what areas of development are focused on for goal setting.
Goal Setting
During conversation about developmental questionnaire results, we will discuss where children might need extra instruction. I will give a few suggestions for things I see can be improved upon and ask for suggestions from you. After a few days, we reconnect and settle on a goal to work on and I formally document those goals.
Teaching and Observation
This is the part where things are fun! I teach the children what will help them reach their developmental goals. I will also give ideas for you to do at home and provide materials to assist in learning. While working on the child's goal, I will document my observations as the child learns and works towards their goal. Documentation can include actual notes or photos!
Activities are planned based on the interests of the child. In the photo to the right, the child had a new tooth coming in and was learning how to count to 10. On our flannel board, I put our teeth counting activity where the child could practice counting while also using fine motor skills and creating patterns by making the mouths look the same.
Further Planning
This is an on-going process, I watch the children while doing planned activities. When I know what a child's goal is, I look at my lesson plan and curriculum and make a note by specific activities so I can focus on the concept of the activity with children whose goal aligns with the concept. For example if a child has a goal of counting to ten and not skipping any numbers I would take time during free play to work with the child on counting during play.
