In its breadth and diversity, this 4th edition contains wide ranging and systemically arranged information on both digestive and extradigestive carcinoids (ECCs/NECs) and their relevant endocrinocarcinomas as well as pancreatic islet cell neoplasms.
A few minor changes are made in the fourth Edition with additional 4 articles that are of a considerable importance.
Two of them are included in the last Chapter of "Some problems in carcinoid research", describing some evolutional proposals based on the author's recent concept.
The author points out the inadequacy of the term "carcinoid" and emphasizes advisable warnings that the term was proposed on a malignant submucosal nodule of the small intestine which was misjudged as a benign lesion. The term “carcinoid” is a misnomer and should not have been in the history.
Also very early carcinoid formation is clearly demonstrated in a form of budding from the basal portion of a gastric gland, proving that a carcinoid is malignant at its origin.
It is hoped that young physicians and researchers alike will benefit from these detailed studies when encountering such cases in the future. It is believed that a copy of this important work would be a valuable addition to any Departmental Library.

第4版は、消化性カルチノイドと消化性カルチノイド（ECC / NEC）、さらに関連する内分泌腺癌および膵島細胞新生物に関する広範囲の情報が体系的に整理されている。また、小改編および重要な4つの記事が追加されている。重要な追加のうち2つは、最終章「カルチノイド研究におけるいくつかの問題」にあり、著者の最近の概念に基づいた進化的提案を行っている。
著者は用語「カルチノイド」の不適切さを指摘する。この用語は小腸の悪性粘膜下結節を良性病変と誤診したために命名されたと述べ、「カルチノイド」という用語は誤った名称であり、歴史に残すのは不適切であると強く提言している。
また、非常に初期のカルチノイドは胃腺の基底部から発生すると明確に示し、カルチノイドは発生起源から悪性腫瘍であることを証明した。
若い医師や研究者らがこうした症例に遭遇した際に、これらの詳細な研究が役立つと期待される。この重要な著作物はどの医学系図書館にとっても貴重な追加になると思われる。
