Jun Soga fell asleep on May 4, 2020, at the age of 86,while he was undergoing medical treatment for long time.

◆Main achievements◆
As a pathologist, Professor Soga has contributed greatly to establishing the concept of carcinoid tumors, which are malignant tumors that occur in many organs, and their related tumors (neuroendocrine tumors), His histological classification of carcinoid tumors has been internationally recognized as "Soga's Histologic Classification".
In the field of gastroenterology, he made efforts to train medical professionals in Japan and overseas. He went to several developing countries in response to JICA's request. In those countries, he provided instruction on surgical techniques to gastroenterological surgeons and education on pathological diagnosis of resected specimens.
Thus,he has consistently contributed to the development of medicine with an international perspective throughout his life.
◆主要業績◆
病理学者として、多数の臓器に発生する悪性腫瘍であるカルチノイド腫瘍およびその類縁腫瘍(神経内分泌腫瘍)の疾患概念の確立に大きく寄与し、氏が確立した カルチノイド腫瘍の組織学的分類は「曽我分類」として国際的に認知されている。
消化器外科学分野においては国内外で医療人の育成に尽力した。JICAの要請に応えて数か国の開発途上国に赴き、現地の消化器外科医らへの手術手技指導や切除標本の病理学的診断の教育などを行った。
生涯一貫して国際的な視点を持って医学の発展に尽くした。
