Junior AUSMUN Summer Camp is a four day immersive experience and preview of high school Model United Nations, designed for rising 7th through rising 9th grade students. Campers will gain critical research and writing skills, public speaking confidence, global awareness, and long-lasting friendships through participation in Junior AUSMUN Camp!
It is important, now more than ever, that students and members of younger generations are informed on and involved in international current events. Model United Nations provides the space and opportunity for young people to learn about diverse topics from differing perspectives, offering valuble lessons in compassionand intention.
We can promise two things:
Participation in Junior AUSMUN Summer Camp will thoroughly prepare middle school students and incoming freshmen with the research, writing, critical thinking, public speaking, and interpersonal skills necessary to thrive in advanced high school classes.
Participation will also guarantee free registration to AUSMUN 2025 in September! AUSMUN is a state-wide, 450+ delegate conference that we host here at Austin High School. More information will be sent via email after camp has concluded or by request.
About Us
Model United Nations is an international extracurricular activity in which students debate international humanitarian, economic, and environmental issues from the perspective of a country, politician, or organization. Austin High School is the only school in the district that offers Model UN as an in-school elective class; 10th-12th grade students are able to take this elective, while freshmen (9th grade) students are encouraged to join Model UN Club at lunch! Both groups are able to participatein MUN lessons and year-round conferences around Texas.
Model United Nations has the primary goal of instilling the values of collaboration, respect, and creativity among delegates/participants. In a typical MUN conference room, delegates will first give short speeches to share their position on a global issue. There will then be a few moderated debates and ultimately an unmoderated session where delegates collaborate to draft a resolution paper; outlining future steps, reccomendations, and actions taken to combat whatever issue is currently being discussed.
Austin High School has one of the largest and most successful Model UN programs in the state of Texas. In 2024, Austin High hosted its sixth annual conference, AUSMUN, which welcomed over 15 schools and 450 students from across Texas.
AUSMUN is known for its vibrant debates, thorough background guides, and welcoming environment; the best part is that it is completely student led. The Austin High Model UN Program provides valuable leadership opportunities through its dynamic student board, with solidified positions ranging from registration and logistics to fundraising and outreach. AUSMUN has the primary goal of serving those in our community, as seen through our ongoing donations to nonprofit organizations, "Community Closet" of formal attire, recurring community service events, and year-round free MUN education and programming for students of all grades at Austin High.
Other than AUSMUN and Junior AUSMUN Summer Camp, our two other conferences we host are FreshMUN and MiddleMUN. FreshMUN is a half-day Model UN conference designed specifically for AHS freshmen, across all four academies. Topics are chosen based on pillars of the four academies; for example, freshmen in the Academy for Global Studies would have topics such as Climate Change and Ocean Acidification, while students in the Academy for Design and Technology would debate topics such as Artificial Intelligence in Drone Warfare. Additionally, we host a one-day conference in the Spring just for middle school students! This conference is a distinctly collaborative and educational experience, designed to expose students to world issues and prepare them for high school Model UN.
