"That's What Friends Are For (The Vulture Song)" is a song in the Walt Disney film The Jungle Book from 1967. It was sung by a quartet of "mop top" vultures who are making friends with Mowgli, the main character of the film. The song was written by Disney staff songwriters, Robert and Richard Sherman, and sung primarily by J. Pat O'Malley, Lord Tim Hudson, Digby Wolfe, and Chad Stuart. Bruce Reitherman and George Sanders both made cameo appearances in the song singing as Mowgli and Shere Khan the tiger, respectively, in different parts.[1] In the soundtrack album, The Mellomen member Bill Lee replaced the unavailable Sanders.[2]

The Shermans were brought onto the film by Walt Disney, who felt that the film in keeping with Rudyard Kipling's book was too dark for family viewing. In a deliberate effort to keep the score light, this song as well as the Sherman Brothers' other contributions to the score generally concern darker subject matter than the accompanying music would suggest. In the case of "That's What Friends Are For", the vultures sing in the style of a barbershop quartet, making their song endearing to Mowgli - and that much more dangerous.[1] The lyrics feature many double entendres regarding how the vultures eat other animals.[3] The song was originally conceived as a rock and roll song, sung by the quartet of vultures. The vultures were even designed based on The Beatles, with moptop haircuts and mock-Liverpool accents, and would be voiced by the band, which did not come into fruition due to problems with their schedule. During production Disney decided the 1960s style rock would cause the song to be considered dated later, leading "We're Your Friends" to be changed to the barbershop quartet that appears in the film.[4]

Anytime a reprise takes place, it is rare that it ends up being better than the original song, and that theory proves accurate with "Colonel Hathi's March (Reprise)." It is the same march song that takes place earlier on in the movie, except it is a lot shorter and more to the point.

While Shere Khan doesn't get a big villain song within this movie, Kaa does. "Trust In Me" is one of the creepiest songs that Disney has ever created, and it's one that suits his character and the cunning way in which he behaves, trying to trick his enemies with his hypnotizing eyes.

The song is slow-paced but has a really catchy beat, and that really makes sense in that he sings this while trying to hypnotize people. The way it's sung really adds to the eerie feeling that the song provides and for a slithery snake, it is perfect.

The relationship between Mowgli and Baloo really is the driving force of this entire movie, with the connection that they share being an incredibly genuine and sweet one. That's what makes "The Bare Necessities" a really enjoyable song, as their bond just shines through and carries it.

It's a really upbeat and positive number that is all about just enjoying life and having fun, and that message shines through with the melody and the lyrics. When the two of them get into the song it becomes a real toe-tapper that everyone enjoys.

While "The Bare Necessities" is a Disney classic, The Jungle Book features one greater song, which is belted out by King Louie. This is the most fun part of the movie and it just brings a real party atmosphere to the whole thing, with great energy and excitement throughout.

The fact that all the characters involved end up dancing around really adds to the whole thing, which leads to one big positive song that is impossible not to smile and dance along with. It's a song that has gone on to be beloved by Disney fans and really is a huge part of this movie.

Take, for instance, Baloo, in the original text a wise, respected elderly mentor who patiently drills Mowgli in the laws of the jungle and who looks like a bear; in the film, a wisecracking, easily distracted slacker with a tendency to break into song who advises Mowgli to chill out and just focus on the bare necessities, and who rather looks like singer/comedian Phil Harris.
