Georgia WAND Education Fund, Inc.
This summer I worked with Georgia Women’s Action for New Directions (Georgia WAND), and more specifically, the Georgia WAND Education Fund, INC. WAND is an NGO that works to redirect the federal budget away from militarism and war-spending, and towards unmet humanitarian needs. The bulk of my work this summer centered around environmental justice in Shell Bluff, Georgia, which is off-site a large nuclear facility and is dealing with nuclear contamination and consequent health concerns. I helped with the Radionuclide Education Monitoring and Outreach Program (REMOP) by researching existing scientific sources to help support a year-long curriculum to educate and inform the citizens of Shell Bluff, GA on nuclear power, radiation, and contaminants in the area, and analyzed radiological air monitoring data from over two years to inform Georgia WAND's recommendation to the REMOP Community Advisory Council of potential placement for a permanent air monitoring station in Burke County. In addition, I helped draft a report detailing the intersection of nuclear power and climate change, coordinated a telephone town hall on U.S./ Korean Peninsula foreign relations, and attended coalition meetings, where I learned about advocacy, social justice, and civic engagement.
