Due to the closure of schools due to COVID-19, I was only able to get as far as talking with my principal. I have also requested to be part of the first group to be trained in the SWIS program, which will further add to my knowledge of how to guide our move to more defined problem behaviors and solutions. (Evidence E)
2. My plan of action will be continued at an appropriate time in the future. My principal was supportive of the idea of my looking into this further, so I believe my plan of action will be viable at another time, when I am able to interact with other stakeholders more directly.
3. Reflective Practice was continually used throughout this process as I have looked for leadership opportunities outside the classroom, which in this case was planning to find ways to address the identified school-wide need and have regularly reflected on my own growth. As I have moved through this process and plan, I have spent more and more time looking at how situations can be made more equitable, related to dealing with problem behaviors but also the education system in general.
Personal Effectiveness has been used by identifying a passion, in this case to create more equity within my school, and leadership strengths in order to move toward promoting improvement within my school. I then had to respond to adversity when schools closed and any original plans were quickly derailed.
I have used the competency of Collaborate Purposefully by engaging in self-education and self-reflection. I have given a great deal of thought on how I engage with other cultural groups and where I can make improvements, thereby setting an example for others. For example, I know that I struggle to speak up at times when with others I perceive as "better or smarter" than me. Therefore, I will work on speaking up when appropriate and also provide assurance and encouragement to others to speak up as well.
Coaching and Mentoring is my final competency. Applying this competency in my project was cut short. However, I do place high value on growing professionally and have continued to think about how I can promote a collegial environment of trust and respect. When I am able to move forward with my project, I will be even more prepared for addressing and engaging others in our identified challenge of defining problem behaviors and consequences. I found the article below, Diversity and Design: How we can shape a more inclusive industry?, very informative.( Evidence F) While the article itself is not written about education, it contains many ideas that can easily be applied in the educational setting.
4. The obstacle I encountered is the shut down of schools due to COVID-19. This immediately placed anything I was planning on hold. I hope to continue at a future time.
5. One change I can make is to do more research and find examples that other schools have in place in order to be more informed about options.
