The Youth Leadership Program is offered by the city of Burbank to help teenagers learn the importance of being a good leader and teach teens how to be better leaders for their futures. Through November and March, there were 9 meetings in city locations around Burbank, where each location would have a specific lesson taught to us to make us better leaders for the future. The locations we visited around Burbank were Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center, community services building, Verdugo Park, Burbank Recycle Center, Gain Federal Credit Union, YMCA, and Stough Canyon Nature Center. A few lessons in these locations were growth, leaders using their voice, entrepreneurship & banking, sustainable leaders, and volunteers. This program was truly a great experience and expanded my knowledge of leadership and taught me how I can become a better leader in the future. This program also allowed me to expand my connections around Burbank as I met many people who work with the city and this allowed me to have better chances in my future as they will know I went through this program.
During the Summer of 2023, I was volunteering as a Counselor in Training at McCambridge Summer Daze, a children's summer camp that ranges from ages 5-10. I achieved a total of 123.5 hours while working as a CIT at McCambridge. There were monthly meetings regarding plans with the program and practice interview skills and mock interviews to better prepare us for the future. During this opportunity, I was able to achieve many valuable skills that I can now apply to future jobs and better myself for future interviews as I am better prepared on how to act during an Interview. Some skills I gained from being a CIT were how to multitask, be an efficient worker, be a good listener, be patient, and so much more on how to work with kids.
California Scholarship Federation (CSF)
CSF is an organization in Burbank High School that helps students get scholarships. I am in this program and have learned great time management and responsibility. I've learned how to help others and give my time for tutoring hours. I've learned to get my assignments done early and on time so that I will continue to maintain a spot in the CSF program. I tutor students with subjects that I believe I am capable of doing, such as biology, financial planning, ethics, American sign language, algebra 1&2, English, geometry, and psychology.
Kashaf - St. George Scout
This group at my church has taught me how to socialize with everyone in my community, how to respect my teachers, and how to appreciate all their hard work put into this group. I have been in this group for over 6 years, playing the trumpet. I've gotten to know my peers in this group and learned to become friends with everyone there. This group has brought me so much joy and showed me what it's like to be a part of something big, and I am so thankful for that. Something I'm proud of achieving in this group is the fact that we made it to TV on an arab channel, performing for one of the biggest priests there is in the Arab community. We were on LIVE and got to experience the thrill of other people's joy and excitement watching us. Because of my experience in this group, I get to teach younger generations of students entering and commit my time to ensuring the best possible results.
Save the Trees Club
Save the Trees was a student-created club I co-founded with a couple of friends during my sophomore year of high school. The Save the Trees Club initiative was to help fundraise money for countries like India to plant trees through connections we had. We had biweekly meetings with our members to discuss plans, such as fundraiser ideas, club member roles, and financials within our club, allowing us to see how much profit we gained. We created print marketing for the club, such as posters, flyers, and social media posts and accounts to have more outreach for our club. We were able to fundraise and plant several trees in India and hope that any effect we may have had is long-lasting.
Gain Independent Advantage Ambassador
After taking the independent advantage course at Gain Federal Credit Union, which is a financial literacy course, I became an ambassador for their course and now advertise this class. The financial literacy courses consist of checking account basics, budgeting & setting financial goals, credit and borrowing, and writing check basics. At the end of the four lessons, the students would get electronic access and learn to use an ATM. I have been an ambassador since junior year, and my role requires attending monthly meetings where we discuss how to get the best outreach for these courses. I was assigned to give presentations to English and government classes to the students at Burbank High School in hopes that it would pique their interest and I would encourage them to sign up. I was able to convince over 10 people to sign up for these courses and have improved my public speaking skills, marketing techniques, and responsibility through being a Gain ambassador.
Edily Ambassador
Edily is an app that encourages younger generations, such as Gen-Z, to find resources in the format of a social media post that may help them learn new topics and get tutored. During my junior year at Burbank High School, I volunteered to be an Edily ambassador and my job consisted of getting more outreach for their app and advertising their app to my peers in school. I was in charge of giving presentations to the business classes in hopes that they would be interested in joining as the app helps with topics like financial literacy and accounting as well. I had to test their app for them and write journals sharing my experience with the app, giving them tips for improvement and ideas I believe could've gotten their app more outreach. I was able to convince a couple of peers to sign up and heard them state they enjoyed the format of the app and even began creating their posts to teach others about the app. I gained valuable skills through being an Edily ambassador as I learned the struggles of marketing an app and trying to find the right audience to market it to.
