Hackers hacked the FBI's email servers and sent out thousands of fake messages that says that they were victims of a "sophisticated chain attack". The attack was first reported by Bleeping Computer and initially uncovered by the Spamhaus Project, which is a non-profit organization that investigates email spammers. The hackers sent out emails to 100,000 different people, using the FBI's public-facing email system to make it seem more realistic. The FBI said that "the impacted hardware was taken offline".
According to the FBI, schools, K-12, began to be the leading target of ransomware attacks in the fall of 2020. This is believed to be caused by the need for a rapid transition to online learning, ultimately leaving many gaps in the schools cyber security. One incident in San Bernardino locked employees out of the district network, causing classes to proceed without much technology. Another malware incident occurred at College of the Desert, which caused the college website and email system to go down. Due to many ransomware attacks, many Coachella Valley schools and Palm Spring Schools are investing in cybersecurity.

Then, they took all the vulnerable servers offline and warned local authorities. According to Acer, the cyberattack had no impact on operations or business continuity.
