"Everyone has their own story . Tell it."
I grew up in Northern California. As a young couple my parents came from Panama, Central America to start their family, of four boys and one girl. My parents instilled the importance of getting an education, finding a career, and raising families of our own.
I recently completed a successful forty-plus year career in the corporate industry. I was busy as a wife, mother, entrepreneur and later as a stepmother.
My husband and I blended our families, each of us bringing two children to the union. We both have a heart for the special needs community because our youngest sons each have a different special need.
Publishing my first children’s book about my son Tommie was an exciting highpoint of my life. It guided me towards writing my second children’s book about my daughter Malia and how she learned to navigate being a sibling of a special needs brother. I am now excited to continue the writing of my third book sharing the story of the world of autism through the lens of my stepson.
I believe everyone has their own story to tell. My passion to creating my books is to tell our story. My desire is to reach, teach and educate the communities around us with stories of our differences. I hope to share and inspire each other, so we all can learn and grow inclusive communities.
For many years I was a divorced single mother with two small children, a seven-year-old daughter, and a four-year-old son. My son was diagnosed at birth with a condition called hydrocephalus. I can’t even begin to express to you the fear and uncertainty of his life in those dark days. What held me together? My faith. My family and friends. When my son was finally shunted (an internal pump within his brain) we were able to begin our new life as a family of three.
I had a long career in the corporate world working in the IT industry. I learned to balance the children’s school life, and my workweek. It’s so true a mother’s life is that of juggling and wearing multiple hats to get the job done. Once again, my faith sustained me.
As time moved on, the opportunity for a second marriage formed. We both brought our children into our union. My two and his two. The blended family life is another uphill climb. Is it easy? No. Is it worth it? Yes! One of the unique things that brought my husband, and I together were that our younger boys each had a different special need. One with an intellectual disability and the other with autism. It was wonderful that we were able to draw on each other’s strengths, to pull each other along as we journeyed through this life together.
Today as a wife, mom, stepmom, and Children’s Book Author I have discovered my passion through my books to share and educate the communities around about this beautiful, unique community of children and adults alike that have their own special way of learning, loving and being a part of this magnificent world!
