Allotments Available
I finally got round to testing the soil on my allotment, despite best intentions last year I never got round to it!
The soil appears to be sandy with clay underneath.
So the results from a mixed selection of soil from three areas on my plot
So I have fairly acidic soil with low nutrients; possibly due to my massive courgette crop last year leaching the allotment of minerals! [ed. Not likely now as tests from soil outside of plot are consistent with these values]
Well I’m going to leave the soil at around 5.5 for my potatoes (which like it a little acidic), then lime my soil up to 6.5 for my other areas.
Epsom salts will also help by adding Magnesium; which all plants need to make chlorophyll.
Adding more manure will help with water retention and add Nitrate but lower my pH again so that will be a balancing act with the liming.
Low acidity soils apparently reduce nitrate, phosphate and mineral uptake by most plants so it is definitely worth the effort of liming early in the season to help with this.
