Basic Composting etiquette

Summary of good composting technique

We have two types of compostable waste on site:

Long term compostables: Suggested compost time 2 years

Woody material with a root/stem diameter greater than your thumb. If adding to your compost heap chop these into finger length pieces before adding.

Short term compostables: Suggested compost time 1 year

Soft green material (e.g. grass, vegetable leaves) mixed with brown woody material with a diameter less than your thumb; still sensible to chop up as best you can but if small enough not an issue.

When adding to compost heaps mix your new material in, so it composts better. It may be necessary to add some compost improver occasionally.

Non-compostable waste:

• Perennial weeds (dandelions and thistles) or weeds with seed heads.
• Animal waste.
• Diseased plants

Non compostable waste should be removed from site as normal
