One of the more memorable scene from Star Wars the original trilogy is the part where R2-D2, the handsome blue and white robot, displayed a holographic video of Princess Leia's and her message in front of Luke and Obi Wan. Being able to record a three dimensional video is a big deal to many. Recently, Microsoft have research a project they dub as Holoportation to playback and show three dimensional videos to the Hololens.
Upon looking at the Holoportation demonstration, I was taken back by how advance it seems, but there are notable downside and upside to the way it works.
The way the Holoportation works is that it uses camera all around the area to be recorded to create 3D recordings in real time. The biggest con to this is with our current technology, as it requires setting up an area ahead of time and needs the subjects to be recorded in the area. If you wanted to get a recording from outside, you'd need to have those camera set up, and even then, the resolution might not be high quality without sacrificing what I would assume be a significant amount of performance. Some potential solution, on the other hand is if everybody has a camera that can constantly record their surrounding to work together in unison to get requested recordings, but that's a whole other topic.
Another downside I notice is that it requires user to wear the Hololen. Not everyone like how it looks but without it, you wouldn't be able to see the other person or object unless you look at a television which defeats the purpose of Holoportation for the most part.
If we toss the need to have footage wherever and whenever on demand, then Holoportation isn't actually quite that bad. The holoportation project could be set up in a specific area for usage similarly to how one would set up their Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. On the more gloomier side, we can record messages for our love ones or a will ahead of time to be sent similarly to how Princess Leia made her message. This allows higher quality 3D footage to be recorded and only need to be set up once.
What I find especially neat about Holoportation is that it also record objects within it's area that it is observing. We see in the video below that the doll and chair was viewable without the need of additional tracking or camera than what one would originally need.
