What is Newsela?
Newsela is an online resource that differentiates instruction with different reading levels and built in scaffolding. Many article also translate to Spanish as well. Newsela features thousands of real-world texts with diverse perspectives. Newsela can engage students with topics that are relevant, while building the background knowledge and vocabulary they need to become better at reading comprehension. Newsela syncs with google classroom and also offers a reading quiz option based on reading level and language for students to take.
Use in the CTE Classroom
Read article relevant to CTE independently
Read-Pair-Share about an article students chose
Pair students with different reading levels to discuss article
Have students read the article of choice in native language and then in English
Personally, I have attempted to use Newsela two different times during my internship. My advice is to strive for students to become accustomed to using Newsela before attempting to use it. Trying any new thing in a classroom can be confusing but Newsela seemed to be more than usual. As a teacher, you are able to upload an assignment from Newsela into classroom but students must make an account and then know how to navigate their Newsela account.
