For many, September 11th changed the world. It was the most surreal event. Unprecedented in nature, it was a moment that united the hearts and minds of the American people. As one, the nation grieved and called for a response from their government. This phenomenon occurs time and time again when tragedy strikes across the globe, such as the event “One Love Manchester” in response to the Manchester Arena bombing of May 22, 2017, or the wide-scale response to the Russian incursion into Ukraine. The people of the world stood up and spoke out about these pressing issues. But who are the leaders of these causes? Who are they who spur the people into action, to act as beacons and set the example?
It is clear from an outside perspective that the role of the music industry is prevalent in these situations. A clear example is the “Concert For New York” in Madison Square Gardens. Artists from across Britain and the United States came together in joint solidarity to pay recognition to the firefighters and first responders who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack, and to fundraise for New York City. John Ondrasik (also known by his stage name Five For Fighting) was one such musician who contributed to the event. He said, “It was an unearthly experience. I was honored and blessed to pay tribute to the heroes who ran into those buildings at ground zero, and hopefully, through a song, provide a little solace to family members who’d lost loved ones.” Across social media and television, this event was marked by support and love from the music and creative community.
Today, however, there is a stark contrast to the love we once saw. Today, we see a rise in hate, conflict, and diverse hostile presence from social media and public figures. Since the horrifying events of October 7th when the terrorist organization known as Hamas committed a brutal attack against Israel, the Anti-Defamation League marked a 337% increase in global antisemitism. This is not just an issue for Jews, but an attack on the civil rights of all people, the very freedoms for which our (Western) countries stand. There are clear reflections of this on our musical and creative leaders. Since the beginning of this conflict, the Jewish presence on social media has greatly diminished. Artists of every stripe, background, and audience base have largely withheld comment or stated a firm position on these issues. While of course some work to promote information or speak out for their Jewish brethren (and we thank, and recognize you) there are all too many accounts gone silent in this trying time.
When confronted or questioned, many will proclaim concern for artists to support their Jewish brothers on such controversial topics. The Israeli war with Hamas is a situation swirling with disinformation and propaganda on both sides, thus concluding an already complicated topic. A public figure can be worried about choosing the socially accepted “right side” of a case. Some influencers might prefer to maintain a neutral stance on political or controversial issues, including those related to Israel or Jewish identity, to appeal to a broader audience. Others seek to avoid alienating followers who hold differing opinions. It's also possible that some influencers may simply not feel strongly about Jewish or Israeli issues, or they may not be well-informed about them, leading to a lack of recognition.
Understanding the rationale behind opposing viewpoints enables us to engage in more constructive dialogue. By appreciating the complexities that shape differing opinions, we can foster empathy and mutual respect, laying the groundwork for meaningful conversation and potential compromise. Moreover, identifying common ground and shared values among differing perspectives can facilitate collaboration toward addressing the underlying issues. Acknowledging and respecting diverse viewpoints is essential for promoting open-minded discussion and working towards constructive solutions that benefit all stakeholders involved. In this issue, of course, both “sides” seek an equitable solution, and with that in mind, it is important to recognize the impact an artist can have and their responsibility to utilize such a post toward the safety and prosperity of not only the Jewish people but for all those in times of struggle for the generations to come.
Publicly advocating for Jews and Israel can help raise awareness and actively combat antisemitism, which continues to be a pervasive issue globally. Speaking out against prejudice and discrimination, influencers can contribute to fostering a more inclusive society. Influencers have a platform to educate their followers about Jewish history, culture, and contemporary issues, including the Israeli-Hamas conflict. Providing accurate information and perspectives can help dispel misconceptions and promote understanding. This stands for any current conflict or injustice in the world, from the Ukraine war to the internal strife of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to very localized issues within our nation; our leaders have a responsibility to take the step forward to combat these issues.
In conjunction with this position, I reached out to John Ondrasik, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the StandWithUs International Conference. During the event, he delivered a rousing performance and talk, drawing attention to the alarming rise of antisemitism and the lack of support for Israel among popular personalities. Ondrasik, a renowned musician known for hits such as “Superman” and “100 years”, is a social activist and philanthropist. Over the last two decades he has used his music to support numerous charitable causes, including the United Service Organizations and the war in Ukraine. Most recently, he released a song titled “OK”, which was a response to the October 7th attacks in Israel and the subsequent rise in global antisemitism. Ondrasik highlighted in an interview the necessity of cross-platform dialogue with our peers: “For us to stand up unequivocally, we need people from all walks of life.” Mr. Ondrasik further spoke of the responsibility of the creative industry in these matters. It shouldn't matter where you come from or who your people are, but it is the job of influencers and fellow people to stand against injustice and support those in a time of need regardless of personal stake or representation. It is important to note the importance and impact each of us can have. As Ondrasik put it, “It's important not to be cowed or apprehensive to stand up for what you believe in, to endure. Students should be focused on sports and getting good grades, to prepare for the next chapter of their lives and going to college. It is sad that students are here combating antisemitism and anti-Israel rhetoric; but since you are, I think everyone has a role to play. Nothing is too little.” Students can contribute by spreading awareness and information about Israel; with so many un/miseducated people in the world, a simple word can provide aid to great lengths. A conversation with friends or an informative Instagram story are great ways to fight for what we believe in even if the Israeli conflict is so far away.
We are all scared of vitriol. Artists worry about angry audiences and students about antisemitic academic organizations. We all wish to live our lives in peace, without hate or discourse. However, at the same time, we must stand for what we believe in. Now is the time to look critically at our information bases, our social media, and even our friends and family and look to where we can improve. To look at where we can make a difference. Together, men and women of all races, religions, and backgrounds can stand as one against hate, against violence, and forge a place of peaceful coexistence with one another in our ever-evolving society.
