Joy's Wonders and Wanders - D. Teaching Practice

1.1 Procedure of Teaching

When I entered the classroom, I made sure to greet the students first, and then gave them 5 seconds to arrange their chairs properly. I took attendance and followed my teaching procedures.

My teaching procedures were structured according to the time allotted for each topic. For example, when I taught adjectives and needed to finish within 5 days, I divided my approach as follows: the first 2 days for motivation and lesson presentation, the 3rd and 4th days for discussion and activities, and the 5th day for assessment and evaluation.

1.2 Time management and organizing activities

In managing my time, I always set a due date and allocated a time span for every task I needed to accomplish, especially when I had a lot on my plate. This routine helped me stay productive. Similarly, when organizing activities for my students, I made sure to give them enough time to complete the assigned tasks, but with a clear time limit.

Overall, I made sure that I completed my lessons in accordance with my lesson plan.

1.3 Classroom management

My students at SMAN 1 Alalak were very well-behaved and always listened attentively when I gave instructions. For group activities, setting routines, and classroom rules, I consistently used numbered instructions. For example, I would say, "1 – stand up," "2 – go to your designated groups," and "3 – settle down." I always reminded them of the rule, "Listen first, before moving." I also established classroom rules using non-verbal cues, so my students understood that when I raised my hand in a fist, it meant "listen and be quiet."

Their classroom was well-ventilated, which created a comfortable learning environment. There was ample space for activities, and the students always adhered to their seating arrangements. Overall, managing my students was an enjoyable experience.

1.4 Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school

The only challenge I encountered during my stay in SMAN 1 Alalak was the language barrier. Since English is considered a foreign language in Banjarmasin, I had difficulty communicating with my students. Fortunately, my cooperating teachers were very supportive and hands-on in helping me. They were always present in my classes and made sure to assist me with translations. In my first week of teaching, I presented my lessons in English, but after realizing that my students would be more comfortable learning in Bahasa, I made sure to provide translations.
