Recently, scholarship on international service-learning (ISL) has pointed out gaps in what we know about what students learn, and if ISL programs benefit host communities. Journey to South Africa (J2SA) helps fill this gap by offering description and analysis of data collected during our ISL programs over the last 20 years. J2SA is a blend of narrative scholarship, making it informative and approachable reading for a wide audience. This book was produced collaboratively by faculty and students and blends their perspectives with those of our host communities in South Africa. Our goal is to aid readers in understanding how short-term, sustained ISL programs can benefit students and communities.
Student and community voices come through loud and clear throughout J2SA in the form of student-written chapters about the people they meet and interact with in South Africa and excerpts from students' travel journals. Faculty-written chapters provide context for the program and offer insights into successful practices that emerge from it.
J2SA also contains photographs taken by the book's editors that depict the beauty and diversity of South Africa.
