A person's fashion style should reflect on their inner self and I think that's a really great way to define fashion. Fashion should be about expressing who you are, it shouldn't make a different image of yourself than who you really are. Of course there are some times wherein a person can say something like "My clothes don't define who I am" And it's absolutely absurd. Who are you trying to be? I believe that there's different types of people but I dislike the way society has formed each and every one of us individuals.
We try to lower others to build our own self-esteem which is really wrong. What is there to gain but hurting others for our own gain? That's selfish and stupid and we should develop as the human race and overcome these superstitions. The way people judge someone's skimpy clothes and form them to be something vulgar is horrendous, there's endless judgments here and there and there's nothing we can do about it at this point in time.
My sense of fashion style definitely has evolved throughout the years. But it wasn't until 2019 where I had a problem with what I wore. See, before, whenever I went out I only wore a Taylor Swift sweater, jeans, and flats. That was the entire outfit. And it completely showed who I am in those clothes. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and surfed the web with caution and went on YouTube, Pinterest, and everywhere else. That's where I found out about bestdressed, she is such an inspiration to me and it is amazing how she's gotten this far and I take her advice on things, some with a grain of salt because I want my own version to pop out and be me, not a copy of someone else. With my sense in organization, it was easy to find my style throughout Pinterest, months of research, and styles I knew I would look good in. It was simple, nothing too extraordinary but surely still experimenting with styles. I've pinned down my styles to Romantic, Cryptid, Chaotic, and Kawaii Academia. I chose Romantic and Kawaii because they're similar in some aspects in style and I love the use of lace, pastels, and simplicity in both which shows my personality (according to my friends and myself.) And I used Cryptid and Chaotic for how... unironically chaotic both Academias can be. Generally,
I thought I'd go with Dark Academia because I had that sense of wanting dark, grunge, emo fashion ever since because to me they were really fascinating and out of the ordinary which made the style so amazing and captivating to the eye. It was something that definitely stood out from the rest, but my family wasn't really too keen to me when I mentioned it before, which resulted in me wanting the style more. But I've grown and thought it out to know that it definitely wasn't going to go with my style. Because if I did go through with aforementioned style, I will have to completely gain confidence whenever I wear it and commit to it like a marriage. Which was something I didn't want. Now, not only that, but I've wanted to redo my room for a very long while now but my room isn't mine which sucks because I can't move this big, dark closet which was taking up 30% of the room space and I disliked that. I wanted to change the bed but I argued with myself over it and the bed stayed. It was a queen sized bed and had enough space for me and my pile of things that I have lying on it.
Now that it's the middle of the 2022nd year, I've transformed into coquette. Although I still keep in touch with my goth/grunge aesthetic, my academia clothing aesthetic has fully transformed into coquette. I sit in my room with my skirts and lace tank tops with ribbons laying on the ground and still addicted to iced coffee. I'm becoming more feminine than how I used to be back in elementary. Because I used to refuse a lot of the things girls my age liked. Of course I still enjoyed dolls and had a lock and key for my Minnie Mouse diary, however I didn't show it in public.
As someone who has such diverse taste (be it in music, food, art, anything), it has translated itself, and is reflected on my fashion sense. In terms of how people perceive us, I think it's important that we present ourselves in the way that vocalizes our personality or just how we want people to think of us. A first impression if you may, or to just sum it up, I believe in the saying "judge a book by its cover" is a plausible statement. Think within yourself, have you ever judged a stranger, or anyone just by looking at them? Or to make it less harsh, have you ever looked at someone and thought that they may be into something like a culture, a music scene, or they're doing a cool hobby, working a type of job? Everyone has judged a person or a thing at least once in their life.
Continuing with this in mind, as social beings, humans are almost (not all) conformed to a set of rules, norms, and even choosing to rebel against these norms (such as fashion political movement punk), have norms too (in punk, you're technically BOUND to have baggy pants or ripped pants, maybe even those silver black belts).
So, what do we do about our appearance in terms of fashion?
We can conform to a fashion aesthetic, or we can wear what we want. It's really that simple (I don't wanna make another paragraph explaining this [just finished class today, I'm drained]).
JK, I do. Although, there are instances where we do wear what we want and end up conforming to a certain aesthetic. An example of this would be my shift to coquette-ish cottagecore style. I did this solely because I live in a tropical climate and wearing thinner, more airy fabrics are one of the ways I can deal with the heat. Another would be whenever I wear long skirts, and this is just a joke (kind of); not only does it cover my entire legs, it is also less of a pain during bathroom breaks. I don't have a belt, a button, or a zipper to worry about, just gather it up and fire away.
Well, according to my Instagram and Pinterest feed, I am a blend of ideas, each representing a vital part of my personality. LOL, I believe it's a blend of both cottage core, coquette-ish esque vibes, and grunge rock (mainly because it's a waste not to use those clothes anymore. They rock in certain areas too!).
