Hi class! My name is Joshua Meeson and I am a freshman at the College of Coastal Georgia. Today I am hosting a podcast to rhetorically analyze an article authored by Petros Giannakouris, “Greece wants the EU to help run it’s migrant camps.” This article can be found at ABC’s website and it was released on September 15th 2020 and 10:30 PM.
In this article Giannakouris explained Greece's rising issue of accepting and caring for immigrants pouring in but also how it affects the rest of the EU as well. Greece advocates for the EU to assist them and unlike certain issues when the European countries disagree, many countries agree they should help Greece. Certain countries even accept some of the immigrants, as long as they have already been granted “protected status”.
Giannakouris states “The suspects, all from Afghanistan, include two 17-year-olds who were transferred to mainland refugee camps after the fires.” in para four. These fires were a result of the migrants ‘protesting’ over Covid-19 lockdown. Unfortunately, these fires devastated the refugee camp in Lesbos which is why Greece finally advocated for the help of the EU to help; “thousands of asylum-seekers left homeless after fires gutted the squalid, overcrowded Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos.” para two.
The author remained unbias refraining from interjecting her personal views and this article seemed to only cover the raw facts steering away from adding a lot of quotes outside of statements released by high government officials. Our author used numerous rhetorical devices in their writing though such as imagery and word repetition. Giannakouris used the title “European Union” or “EU” five times in a 15 paragraph article, while also stating “migrant” “refugees” and “homeless” over 10 times. These titles were used repeatedly to keep the issue at hand fresh in your mind as you read but there imagery depicting their living situations as well. “asylum-seekers left homeless after fires gutted the squalid, overcrowded Moria refugee camp”. Throughout the article you are able to paint a mental picture of overly crowded and close quartered camps, the fires and inflow of new migrant did not help these conditions.
Our author used key description words to describe relations between countries as well though. They stated that “the EU was determined to show greater solidarity to Greece” in para 7. The EU wants to help Greece solve those problem because they believe immigration in Europe needs to be solved together not just every country offer themselves, this is why Germany will take in nearly fifteen hundred immigrant families seeking asylum; additionally the EU is helping Greece build long term shelter for immigrants.
Petros audience was the general public. This article was not written with political bias or any personal thoughts of the author within the article, it was strictly giving attention to the rising migrant population flowing into Europe and talking about how the EU is coming together to solve this problem.
After taking AP European history in high school and also living abroad for numerous years this article caught my eye because I have gotten to see that immigration is not just an issue in America it is world wide. My background in European history allowed me to read this easier though because I know how the EU works and functions more than the common American does. The EU agreeing on major is very important for moral and low tension throughout all the members. The author was successful in their writing because it raised awareness for immigration in a country that doesn't always pop into peoples head when you mention Europe and it also touched on how the EU members are working together to make a positive change in this area.
