Objective:
To create a smart car surveillance system that acts as a security camera and lock for cars.
Background:
Like anyone, we want our possessions to be safe even when we may not be around. Recently, our group has had friends who's cars have been broken into, specifically living in college towns. They had no way to finding out this happened until the next day after the incident and had no way of getting evidence.
Methodology:
Users are able to use their phones to get notifications of "suspicious activity" around their cars and see a 360 degree view around it (almost like a RING doorbell).
Expected Results:
We believe that our smart car surveillance system will reduce the number of car break ins due to the security system, help victims get evidence of incidents, and overall keep people's cars safe.
Costs:
The hardware will take up the bulk of the costs, as the group will be creating the software. When comparing the smart car surveillance system to other similar products, we predict that we will need around $300-400 to purchase the hardware and supplies.
Statement-Restatement Technique:
Problem Statement: People's cars are being broken into.
Real Problem: Car owners have no way of preventing/detecting break ins and have no ways of catching intruders/finding evidence due to not being at the "scene of the crime" as it happens real time.
Present State - Desired State Strategy:
Present State: Car owners are currently not able to detect break ins and find evidence until the incident is well past happening.
Desired State: Decreased car break ins, increased car security and incident evidence.
Kepner-Tregoe (KT) Situation Analysis:
Timing: Although car break-ins/theft have decreased in the past decade, there have been 721,885 vehicles that were reported stolen/broken into in 2020.
Trend: As always, everyone is looking for ways to keep their possessions, specifically cars, secure and safe. No one wants their cars broken into and belongings stolen, especially without anyway to track these incidents.
Impact: The Smart Car Surveillance System will provide car owners with a sense of security, an ability to track their cars, and have a live view of their car if a break-in is attempted/possible.
Kepner-Tregoe (KT) Problem Analysis:
What: Even in 2021, cars are being broken into and stolen. Car owners have no way of being notified of unsuspicious activity until they return to their cars (which could be even days) when it is already too late to find any evidence or catch these intruders.
When: Although car theft/break-ins have decreased in the past decade, statistics show that this is still an ongoing issue that many people still deal with.
Who: The Smart Car Surveillance System will benefit car owners, ranging from an everyday person to car dealerships wanting to keep their cars safe from theft/defacing.
Where: The Smart Car Surveillance System will be placed on cars in a sleek, hidden way that will be unnoticeable to an average person.
Why: People will always need a way to keep their belongings safe and secure.
How: Car owners will simply have to attach the device on the top of their cars and connect it to an application on their phones that will give them access to all of the Smart Car Surveillance System's features.
Design Tasks:
Design the physical device
Capabilities: Record 360 degree view and detect suspicious movement around car
Parts: Raspberry Pi, sensors, camera, casing
Design the software/application
Capabilities: Allows users to view live recording of area around the car, recieve notifications of suspicious movement around car, and contact emergencies if need
Design Goals/Specifications:
Software
User friendly interface
Supports multiple languages
Simple/Boomer friendly
Hardware
Lightweight and portable so it doesn't affect the car's movement
Sleek and simple to "blend" into car design so it goes unnoticed

Differences:
Camermatics focuses on vehicle tracking and simple recording around the vehicle (like a dash cam). However, our smart car surveillance system will focus more on the detection of movement around the vehicle. Similar to a RING doorbell, our product will focus more on having an application that will allow users to get live recordings of the area around the car and a security sytem that notifies them of possible break ins or suspicious activities.

Potential Hazards
The software must be secure enough so that outside factors cannot access a user's information/live feed.
The hardware must be manufactured to ensure it doesn't fall off the car and cause any damage while the car is in motion.
When the user is done using the device or switches to another car, the device must be disposed of properly so that 1) outside factors cannot access user information/live stream and 2) the components do not possibly harm the environment.
Solution to Potential Hazards
User information will be encrypted to prevent outside factors from stealing information. Also, we will require an extensive password/user log in for each user.
The hardware will go through various testing before the product is put out for production.
It will be the user's responsibility to dispose of the device in the proper waste option. We will also include a step by step process for users to "wipe" their device to make sure others cannot access it.
