Community Apartment project Lesson Plan
(Link to project above)
Overview/Background
The Big Idea/theme for this unit is identity within one’s community and how one interprets how they are impacted and shaped by their community. In this lesson, students will explore ideas about their communities through conversations with peers during group discussions, and will use strategies like brainstorming and mind mapping to find a unifying theme. They then will create buildings or homes using either cardboard or paper provided by the teacher to create their community. After final critiques and gallery walks, they will reflect on their work by a written reflection and a final project. This project is meant to open discussions and create a safe space about ones place in their own community and possibly in society.
