(Philosophy of Indigenous Education)
pine (Philosophy of Indigenous Education) is a group of Indigenous teachers and researchers focused on discussing and implementing decolonial and Indigenous pedagogical practices. By identifying and addressing institutional and colonial barriers to knowledge, we hope to make academic settings and practices more accommodating and hospitable to Indigenous students and Indigenous ways of knowing.
As of right now, there are a few activities that we regularly host. Firstly, we have reading groups that we offer each semester. In the fall we lead a Indigenous Fictions reading group where we read and discuss works of fiction by Indigenous authors. We also have a Indigenous Pedagogies group we lead in the spring. In this group we read works about contemporary Indigenous education (e.g., obstacles Indigenous students face, institutional structures that hinder Indigenous learning, etc.). Current and past readings for each group can be found below. Secondly, each summer we host a workshop entitled, "Savage Education." This workshop is centered around the pedagogical and epistemic legacies of Native American and Indigenous boarding schools. Each year there's a different theme, but the workshop is meant to foster discussion and develop research papers and pedagogical practices that combat the epistemic violence perpetrated by Native American and Indigenous boarding schools. More information can be found below.
