Film review of Keeping Mum
‘Keeping Mum’ is a black comedy directed by Niall Johnson. The movie has quite a famous cast, for example, Rowan Atkinson, who is better known as Mr. Bean, or Maggie Smith, who is known for her role in the Harry Potter movies. The film was made in the UK and first appeared in 2005.
The film starts with a scene of a lady named Rosie Jones, who’s in her 40s, sitting on a train. Then suddenly the conductor sees something suspicious in her luggage and she has to go with the police because there are dead bodies in this luggage. About 30 years later the family of the vicar of Little Wallop, Walter Goodfellow, is looking for a housewife. The vicar is so focused on his job that he doesn’t realize that his whole family is unhappy. His wife starts an affair with her golf teacher, his daughter has a new boyfriend every day, and his son is getting bullied in school. But as soon as the new housewife Grace Hawkins arrives, everything changes. Gloria, the vicar’s wife, starts getting happy with him again, his daughter has a longtime boyfriend and his son is more confident and isn’t bullied anymore. And it turns out that the housewife Grace is in reality Rosie Jones and that she’s the mother of Grace. On top, she killed people for her daughter to be happier and she put them in the pond in front of their house that has to get drained.
The film is full of twists and it’s really thrilling and nice to watch especially with the excellent cast. The role of the vicar is the perfect one for Rowan Atkinson in my opinion because I find that it’s similar to the character of Mr. Bean in some way. The tension goes up in the right moments and even if the story is sometimes a bit scary, it’s mostly funny.
The film is all over nice to watch with many scenes to laugh about. If you want to see a movie with a really good mix of all feelings, I can only recommend this film.
