My opinion about film literacy
To me, it’s very difficult to define film literacy and explain it in an appropriate way. But I think that it is the way a film/movie is shot and directed. Another aspect is the camera holding, the angle of the cameras and their positions in the specific shots. You need a lot of experience to be one of the best filmmakers and your team has to have a lot of experience too. They also have to be very professional and know the best way to shoot the shots and know what settings are the best in special conditions.
If you want to watch a film, I can recommend you to watch it in a language other than your mother tongue. Because it this way you are going to learn many new words and phrases you wouldn’t pick up in real life just by chatting with foreigners. I think films can be a really big part of you learning another language because you listen to people speaking this language for a few hours and so you are going to start learning more and more the pronunciation and you maybe get a sense of speaking a foreign language more fluently.
If you watch a lot of different movies (of different genres) you are confronted with a lot of different cultural backgrounds and you will learn a lot. One thing that can be helpful too is if you know a bit of the culture of the country the movie is playing in, so you get to understand some things better than others.
If I want to watch a film, I am a bit conscious of the film I want to watch because I’m rather interested in the content of the film. In fact, I’m more conscious if I have to watch a movie for the school but there I can’t choose the content of the film because the teachers choose the film. I would say that my favourite genre is science-fiction because I like watching the things that happen in there and that these things might be reality in our future.
