Teaching

Shortened Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher of Mathematics, I wish to illuminate students to my field of study. In Math students often articulate their problems using vision as a metaphor. “I can’t see it.” My goal as their instructor is to give them the ability to “see” the hidden patterns in problems and dissect ways to go about solving them. Depending on the context mathematics may start to resemble a foggy cloud of numbers and letters, or huge walls of equations and funny symbols. I wish to help students see past all of the mess and understand the deeper beauty that lies in mathematics.

Teaching Background

My mother was an elementary school teacher in her home country before moving to the States and her love of teaching was passed down to me. I strive to humanize myself in the classroom. It is important to me to show my students that I indeed am a "human" too and can make mistakes. As a student, I "checked all the boxes" of students which cause universities to worry: first-generation, historically underrepresented, on Pell Grant, a parent. Representation matters and if students can't identify themselves with success they tend to have a harder time achieving it.
