We host robotics classes in Albany, California, for teams of six children, ages 9 to 14. Classes meet once a week for two hours. Each class session can be divided into roughly two sections: first we go over STEM Fundamentals and then we prepare for a robotics Competition.
The Fundamentals section focuses on principles from classical mechanics, and students are guided to create simple structures and machines using toy parts to learn about how each principle works in practice. Some meetings also introduce programming skills to help run the machines. A more detailed schedule and curriculum is available here.
Lessons from the Fundamentals class form the basis for the second Competition part of the class, which prepares the kids to compete in the FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge (FLL) competition. Participants will team up to design, build, and program a robot that will compete for the highest score against other regional teams at the competition. Recreational competitions are held in February at a to-be-determined hosting site in the Bay Area. The Competition part of the class lasts for 55 minutes and is held ten minutes after the end of the Fundamentals section.
The class fee of $200 per month is collected at the beginning of every month. There is also a $450 registration fee for the FLL competition, and this will be divided among team participants. Parents and guardians can decide whether their children will participate in the actual FLL competition team, but the cost of classes is the same. Competition dates have not yet been released, but there are two types of competitions, qualifiying and recreational. Classes last for 20 weeks and continue beyond the competition.
Class Time: Saturdays, from 2pm to 4pm
Location: Albany, CA
One Month: $200

No experience with robotics or programming is necessary to join. It will help if the child is already comfortable putting LEGO sets together. All necessary materials are available to students at the our site, which provides them with a full and current FLL Challenge table, computers to operate the robots, and a comfortable space to build their projects. We also provide FLL competition materials (cost for 2024: $350), a LEGO® SPIKE™ Prime set ($399.95), a LEGO® SPIKE™ Expansion set ($133.95), a large collection of LEGO® Technic™ parts, and other learning materials for use during classes.
