2021 Johnson High School Cross Country
Information and Expectations
What is Cross-country? A team running sport where boys and girls, grades 7-12, both run a 5K (3.1mi) race on mostly grassy golf courses or city parks with varying terrain, including hilly and flat. We will begin the season with two different 2 mile races, however.
Fall Season: Cross-country begins Monday, August 16th at (8:30am). We will practice for the three weeks before school starts, running in the mornings M-F. A practice may be run on Saturdays during the season. You need to have all forms, a sports physical on file and fees turned into the Athletic Director to practice. After school starts, on September 7th, practice will begin at 3:15. Practice will typically last 2 hours.
Expectations: Commit to coming to practice every day, come with a positive attitude, communicate with me if you have concerns or will miss practice for any reason (email me and copy your parent/guardian in the email), be prepared for practice (have a water bottle, running shoes, comfortable running clothes--if you need help acquiring these let me know). Bonus item to have is a watch--will help you time your runs, intervals, etc.
Weather/Practice: Plan on practicing no matter the weather. We will run outside in the rain, heat and cold. Make sure you are dressed appropriately for the conditions. If for some reason (lightning, storming, etc.), practice needs to be cancelled I will post the cancellation on the Website and on the Facebook page. I will make every effort to have practice.
I will update this when I get info about the 2021 season: (COVID-19 protocols: bring own water bottle, bag with hand sanitizer and mask. I will take daily attendance and do a symptom checker when you arrive at practice. Please stay home if you are not feeling well. We will follow protocols set up by the State: https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/sportsguide.pdf)
My hope for you first and foremost is to have fun both individually and as a team, secondly that you will gain a knowledge and appreciation of running--a skill you can use to stay healthy and keep your balance for a lifetime, and finally that you will experience how setting goals and working hard pays off--through improvement in performances.
Encourage others to join! Get a friend, classmate, neighbor, or younger sibling (grades 7-12 can participate) to join the team: Prizes will be given to those who get someone new to join the team. All levels of abilities are welcome, I’ll meet each athlete where you are and help you improve.
For any questions about the team, feel free to contact me, Coach Tarah Koch, at tarah.koch@stpaul.k12.mn.us
I have created a team web page on google. You can share the link with others you think would be interested in joining the team this fall. On the web page I’ll be posting information about the team, practices, schedules, cancellations and any other needed information.

Some of the change for meets: No large invites, meets can only be dual or triangular, no spectators. Shorter season, ending by October 24th. Check under the schedule tab for latest meet schedule.
We will go over safety protocols during first week of practice to keep everyone healthy and safe.
Bring your own water bottle, a bag for any of your belongings (could include small bottle of hand sanitizer, mask). We do not have access to indoor facilities at Johnson. No lockers this year.
We will need to wear masks at all times that we are not running. We also will need to social distance--stay 6 feet apart at all times. When we are running, masks may be removed.
As we have learned from the last few months, much can change quickly, and I will let you know more about the season as I learn it myself.
RECRUIT!!: Goal is to invite and get at least 2 others to join!! Boys and Girls going into 7th grade to 12th grade are eligible. We have had around 5-6 showing up regularly this summer for a captains practice. Several of our members from last year have been running on their own. I'd love to have at least triple that---if we have more, great! Running can easily accommodate more and we can spread out outside.
SUMMER GOALS: If you did a summer goal chart for push-ups and/or miles that you ran, turn it in on the first day of practice. I will have award shirts made.
Even if you didn't train this summer, we'd still love to have you join us. I will create differentiated workouts to meet you where you are at.

Johnson High School Cross Country
Information and Expectations
What is Cross-country? A team running sport where boys and girls, grades 7-12, both run a 5K (3.1mi) race on mostly grassy golf courses or city parks with varying terrain, including hilly and flat. We will begin the season with two different 2 mile races, however.
Fall Season: Cross-country begins Monday, August 17th at 8:30am. We will practice for the three weeks before school starts, running in the mornings M-F. A practice may be run on Saturdays during the season. You need to have all forms, a sports physical on file and fees turned into the Athletic Director to practice. After school starts, practice will begin at 3:15.
I will make every effort to have practice, but may cancel more often this year as we don't have an indoor space.
New this year, COVID-19 protocols: bring own water bottle, bag with hand sanitizer and mask. I will take daily attendance and do a symptom checker when you arrive at practice. Please stay home if you are not feeling well. We will follow protocols set up by the State: https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/sportsguide.pdf
For any questions about the team, feel free to contact me, Coach Tarah Koch, at johnsoncc.coachtarah@gmail.com
I have created a team web page on google. You can share the link with others you think would be interested in joining the team this fall. On the web page I’ll be posting information about the team, practices, schedules, cancellations and any other needed information.
