In August 2011, I started at Morro Bay High School as an English as a Second Language aide. November that same year, I accepted a maths teacher position that was suddenly vacated. The principal called me on a Tuesday night asking me if I wanted to start tomorrow, and I said yes.
After attending the Asilomar Maths Conference, in 2012, I began flipping my classes. By creating videos for the students to watch and take notes, I earned more buy-in. This also allowed for more time in class working directly on-on-one with students. The principal said it was one of the most significant changes at the high school.
In the four years at Morro Bay High School, I also taught AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, which was a class for first generation college bound students, typically from low income families. I enjoyed teaching this course because I was able to see my students outside of a 'math class' environment.
I held the positions of being the Freshmen Adviser and Christian Club Adviser. The biggest role for the Freshmen Adviser was to excite the students for Homecoming and create a float for the parade. I worked with students during lunches and after school creating floats to go with the themes of Pirates, Vikings, and Rock & Roll during the three years I held the position.
I collaborated with student dancers to write and act in one of the schools largest staff participated Mock-Rock Skit.
I was the staff representative for the Christian Club. The group would have lunch in my class once a week. I would help them organize fundraisers and bakes sales to donate money to various local organizations in need.
