When I graduated from university in 2007, I knew I wanted adventure to stay a part of my life. I pursued my teaching career while managing a pottery studio, working at a local sustainable food market, and thriving as a Resident Advisor. I made intentional choices based on my passions that saw me living out of my minibus for two years and substitute teaching while working as a commercial fisherman in California and Alaska for several others. I gained the most valuable experience in all these ventures: connecting with and learning from people from different walks of life.
My teaching career has been threaded with the same hue of purposeful action and lifelong interests.
During my four years teaching at Morro Bay High School, I was a student advisor, club leader, and writer (and actor) in many a mock-rock skit. During my five years at Cayman International School, I chaired the Social Committee, chaperoned both a university and a service-learning trip, presented at the AASSA conference twice, and co-created an aquaponics system to make sustainable science hands-on for secondary students.
My favorite things about teaching are students’ a-ha moments, the challenge and satisfaction of creating engaging and interesting lessons, and connecting with students person-to-person. I reach these moments by consistently reviewing differentiation needs in my classroom. My years of tutoring have given me the ability to quickly assess the needs of many types of students. Even now, in my flipped classroom model, I enjoy monitoring student learning and providing support as I assess student progress in real time. Additionally, during my two years as a Resident Advisor, I had to wear a variety of hats: mentor, program facilitator, emphatic listener, and policy enforcer. These roles directly correlate to teaching as I can effectively communicate and listen to the needs of each student.
With my B.S. in Mathematics, along with these and many other experiences from my life and teaching career, I would like to apply to be a member of your team and take part in educating, shaping, and preparing your students for their next chapter in life.
