Its purpose is to encourage a new generation of engineers on the Isle Of Wight and to keep the name of the late John Ackroyd well known in the engineering world on the Isle of Wight and beyond.
The award is available to any young person under 25 years old who has shown initiative, dedication and a passion for engineering.
THE BASE
The base is made from a mixture of materials which were used in the construction of the early aircrafts:
- Mahogany
- Spruce
- Brass
- Aluminium
THE MAIN TUBE
The main tube is made from the highest quality carbon fibre and s-glass, more modern materials which are commonly used in light weight applications, Thrust SSC being one example.
THE CAP
The cap has a mounted compressor stage 5 blade used in the Rolls Royce Avon engine first produced in 1950 up until 1974 which was the choice of engine used for the record breaking Thrust 2 car.
INSIDE
Inside is John Ackroyd's iconic neck chief wore throughout his life, with him through all his achievements. The cap contains a QR code linking to this site which will be updated every year with the new winners.
