This semester (2nd semester of 2026) I will be on sabbatical, so I will not be holding regular office hours.
A personal statement about Artificial Intelligence: Many of us are deeply concerned about the effects of generative A.I. on our field, and in particular about the growing influece of large A.I. labs in academia.
In light of this, I recently joined the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) ( www.ahmath.org). If you also care about these issues, please consider signing up, too. In particular (from their website):
"1. Members commit to not working with commercial AI companies by providing technical labor, mathematical knowledge, consultation, or publicity.
2. Members commit to not publishing mathematical texts (including papers, reviews, referee reports, lecture notes, teaching materials, and books) generated by AI models. Members only publish their own writing, as opposed to outputs of AI tools. We affirm that mathematical writing should have human authorship."
Although I personally have never used AI tools in my research, nor have any plans to in the foreseeable future, I could be convinced to use open-source AI tools which are controlled by the academic community (not by secretive profit-driven labs). But given how they are using users' chat sessions to train their models in totally non-transparent ways, I personally commit to never using AI tools produced by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, nor any of the other labs controlled by commercial enterprises for any research or exploratory methods whatsoever.
Furthermore, I pledge to never accept gifts, awards, research or travel grants, "free" use of frontier models, nor any other compensation from commercial AI companies (nor their "nonprofit" arms). Credit to Tasmin Chu for suggesting this. We seem to have forgotten that there is no free lunch...
