As of September 2020 the Ministry of Education released Policy/Program Memorandum No. 164 to outline the expectations of remote learning. School boards, staff, students and parents had to understand how "Distance Learning" that took place from March 2020-June 2020 was now transitioning to "Remote Learning" as defined by PPM 164. Some of the key points to note are:
minimum requirements of synchronous learning opportunities (connection between staff and students is real-time/instant/could involve live video conferencing) and asynchronous learning opportunities (connection between staff and students is not real-time)
exemption from synchronous learning opportunities can be requested by parents and an alternate learning plan is established between staff, student, and parent (a daily connection between student and educator is still required, even if it is an asynchronous exchange of information)
