Oldham Chronicle
I recently had the pleasure of working at the Oldham Chronicle on a placement opportunity. This experience was so insightful because I was able to learn within a workplace and work independently, in turn giving me a renewed feeling of confidence within my writing abilities.
Salford Now
I have been working as a freelance reporter for Salford Now for over two years, building my own portfolio of stories based on my local community. In my time writing for them, I have grown my skillset in a vast range of areas that work behind the scenes of every publication. These include: web-sub, social media reporter, editor and council reporting. Alongside this, I have also gained experience in audio and video editing, leading teams of reporters to find stories, learning to effectively communicate with interviewees via telephone or email and using search engine optimisation skills to boost engagement with the Salford Now and wider community audiences.

As part of one of my third-year modules, I was asked to produce a magazine on a topic of my choice. During this period, I became extremely familiar with InDesign and began to develop a new skill in editing and design. Creating a magazine was a new challenge for me, as I had never produced a piece of work on this scale within a set deadline. Throughout this experience, I learnt about the importance of marketing towards target audiences through creating a character profile that would be suited to my magazine by publishing a survey to a wide selection of birdwatching audiences across the UK and building off the results in order to have a model to work towards. I found that when researching for the magazine, there were many aspects, such as imagery that I had not first considered to be challenging. To overcome this, I reached out to a photographer in Suffolk to provide me with some of the images that are included with the magazine, free of charge. A selection of other images were sourced through copyright free publishing sites.
Early Work
In the early stages of my career, I worked on publishing independent articles to explore different mediums of presenting my work to offer a new perspective of journalism that was outside of my comfort zone.

Kim describes it saying “It’s an amazing experience, to be able to go into that, do the boxing and then come out of it again, you miss elements of it.” as well as “It’s one of those experiences where you just jump in and say ‘i’ll do it!’”
