My approach to teaching is guided by two principles:
Mathematics is a fundamentally social activity
Mathematical aptitude is developed through doing mathematics; consequently, everyone has mathematical potential
I strive to put these principles into practice in my classroom by encouraging discussion and student collaboration, and by emphasizing curiosity and exploration. I especially like to provide historical context whenever possible; this often illuminates for students how progress in mathematics is the result of great effort and many failures by many mathematicians, often over the course of several lifetimes.
In 2021, I received the W.E. Briggs Teaching Excellence Award
