Visiting Oslo
Located at the northern end of the scenic Oslofjord, the capital of Norway is a wonderful city for travelers seeking Scandinavian culture, history, and outdoor activities.
Getting to Oslo and OsloMet
From Norway and Sweden: Trains to Oslo sentralstasjon (Oslo S) or Nationaltheatret will take you directly to the center of the city. OsloMet is located a 15-minute walk north of Nationaltheatret rail and metro station, and there are many hotels in the city center within walking or public transit distance of the university.
From outside Norway and Sweden: Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) is the main airport for Oslo and southern Norway and has easy connections to the city center. Most travelers take train services provided by Flytoget (the airport express train) or Vy (Norway's national railroad company, formerly NSB) from the airport to Oslo. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks in the airport or on their apps (Flytoget on the App Store and Google Play, Vy on the App Store and Google Play). One alternative, slower option is Flybussen.
Public transit: Oslo has a well-integrated public transport system with five metro lines, six tram lines, and many buses. Visitors are encouraged to download the Ruter app (App Store, Google Play) to use journey planning tools and to buy tickets. Most travelers purchase tickets on the app that can be shown to ticket inspectors upon request. The closest tram stop to DNVA is Skillebekk. The closest Metro (T-Bane) station is Nationaltheatret, which serves all lines.
Things to Do in Oslo
As Norway's capital, Oslo hosts many of the country's major cultural attractions, including the National Theatre, the Opera House, the National Museum, and the Royal Palace. Other popular museums include the Munch Museum, Akershus Fortress, the Folk Museum, and the Fram Polar Exploration Museum.
Visitors with an outdoorsy inclination may be interested in hiking in Oslo's forests (easily reachable in 30–40 minutes by metro or tram), and maps of the well-signed trail system can be found at UT.no and the UT app. There are also kayak rentals and swimming spots along the Oslofjord. During the summer, Ruter operates several ferry services that show off the natural beauty of the Oslofjord. Travelers interested in further Norwegian adventures following the conference are encouraged to check out the scenic railway to western Norway, Bergensbanen, and the Norway in a Nutshell tour of the UNESCO-protected fjords and the historic Flåm railway.
