• Accelerated Reader (AR) is a digital school program adopted by the Lafayette Parish School System that helps manage and monitor students' reading. 

• Students select books at their level and read at their own pace. Students then take a short quiz on the computer, providing both students and teachers feedback, which is then used to direct ongoing reading practice.

• Each student is given a computer generated test/screening, called the STAR Test,  to determine his/her AR reading level and set a  goal for the school year. 

• Students will be given time to visit the JMS library to checkout AR books during the following times: 

  1. Sustained Silent Reading

  2. ELA Period

  3. Skinny/RTI/AE

• Students will receive classroom and schoolwide incentives for taking AR quizzes each nine weeks. 

Best Practices:

• Students should read a minimum of 20 minutes a day. 

• Students should select and read books within their ZPD.

• Students are encouraged to take AR tests on any book that they read independently, including the anchor texts in the curriculum.

• Students should take a quiz within 36 hours of completing a book. Note: Quizzes cannot be taken at home. 

• Students should only take tests on books that they have read and take no more than 2 quizzes a day. 

• Students should utilize Learning Ally or other audio for support while reading.
