Z.J. Bio

Dr. Z.J. Wang, Spahr Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kansas (KU), received his B.S. from the National University of Defense Technology, and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Glasgow.

Then he conducted post-doctoral research in Glasgow and Oxford before joining CFD Research Corporation in Huntsville, Alabama as a Research Engineer, and later becoming a Technical Fellow.

In 2000, he joined the faculty of Michigan State University as an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. In 2005 he returned to Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University.

In 2012, he joined the faculty of KU and served as the chair of Aerospace Engineering for five years. He has made a significant impact on the development of CFD algorithms and simulation tools, and CFD education.

He has mentored over 20 PhD students. Since he joined academia, he has been an international leader in developing high-order CFD methods into production-level large eddy simulation tools to tackle grand challenges in aerospace engineering on extreme-scale supercomputers including Summit and Frontier.

He was the principal organizer of the International Workshops on High-Order CFD Methods, and through these workshops, put high-order methods at the forefront of new developments in CFD.

As an indicator of his impact, Dr. Wang’s publications have received considerable attention in the CFD community:

In July 2008, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science in Engineering by the University of Glasgow. He served as an Associate Editor of the AIAA Journal for over a decade and is an AIAA Fellow.
