Northern Iloilo State University - Brief History
First known as the Western Visayas branch of the Philippine Institute of Fisheries Technology, the establishment of this school was authorized in the Omnibus Bill that was enacted as Republic Act on May 2, 1952. By legislative mandate, the school served as a training station in canning fish and fish preservation.
On June 19, 1965, R.A. 4349 was enacted. It provided for the conversion of the school into a college otherwise known as the Western Visayas College of Fisheries. Since then, it has significantly contributed to the manpower and development needs of the fisheries industry in the whole Western Visayas Region.
Eighteen summers after, on June 10, 1983, the Western Visayas College of Fisheries was converted into a polytechnic state college by virtue of Batas Pambansa Bilang 500 sponsored by the former Congressman of the Fifth District of Iloilo, the late Hon. Niel Tupas, Sr., BP 500 integrated the Estancia National High School better known today as Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College.
NIPSC have seven campuses located in Ajuy, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Concepcion, Lemery, Sara and its main campus in Estancia.
On June 4, 2013, President Benigno S. Aquino III approved into law, the Republic Act 10597, authorized by Hon. Niel C. Tupas, Jr., converting Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College into Northern Iloilo State University.
However, NIPSC was not able to fully comply with the requirements of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) set forth in Section 25 of the said law.
During the 2nd Regular Session of the 17th Congress, Cong. Raul "Boboy" Tupas authored the Republic Act 11005 to amend RA 10597 giving due time to the compliance for universityhood.
Under the leadership of Dr. Bobby D. Gerardo, as the 5th College President, the University was scrutinized by the CHED Composite Team in a remote validation together with CHEDRO6 Regional Director, Dr. Raul Alvarez, Jr. and Cong. Mark Go, CHTE Chairman, on February 7-10, 2022.
On April 26, 2022, the Commission En Banc issued Resolution No. 22-2022 granting and approving NIPSC to be converted into Northern Iloilo State University.
NISU, as she strongly stands against time, will continue to be the catalyst of change and development in Northern Iloilo and its neighboring areas to provide quality education to its clientele and to be one of the globally acknowledged universities in the field of research, extension and production.
