Ph.D. Students

We are always on the outlook for highly motivated students to to join us. Applicants with a great passion for research and a background in Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering are preferred. Proficiency in a programming language, such as Python, R, Julia, and C++, is desired.


Tentative research topics include: (1) Machine learning and optimization-based decision-making for strengthening the resilience of infrastructure systems under uncertainty. (2) Dynamic resilience of human-infrastructure-community networks following disruptions using network science approaches. (3) Physics-informed machine learning for more effective restoration of complex networks. (4) Climate resilience modeling and optimization of water and stormwater systems.

 

Successful candidates may have an opportunity to obtain an interdisciplinary Ph.D. between Civil Engineering and Computer Science or Industrial Engineering. Generous financial support will be provided for successful candidates to attend academic conferences/workshops and visit other institutions (whenever necessary).  Interdisciplinary research efforts are highly encouraged. Interested students are encouraged to contact us with the subject “PhD position inquiry – your name”.  A CV, academic transcript(s), papers (if any), and a brief statement of background and related experience in your inquiry would be greatly appreciated. A IELTS or TOEFL score is typically required for international applicants whose native language is not English. Note that while a GRE score is not mandatory, it is advisable if your other qualifications are perceived to be less competitive.

We are highly interested in hosting visiting students or scholars who are passionate about conducting cutting-edge research at the intersection of Civil Engineering, Network Science, Data Science,  and Operations Research. The start date is flexible.
