This song talks about being the one to stand up against pollution and greed. The question of the title is frequently asked throughout the lyrics, wondering who will be the one to lead resistance. Tatiana declares that she will be the one to face the system and try to bring it down so that she and those less fortunate can live better lives. However, one flaw with this situation is that no one else is trying to stand up. This comments on the fact that many will wait to follow a cause instead of being the one to start it. This is one way that people can be greedy. Another is that people in power will often choose to sit back and watch chaos because they benefit from it. Even those who are hurt in this situation may not realize because they are so used to the way it affects them. This song encourages people to stand up and make a change so the less fortunate do not have to feel this way.
This song talks about how the War in Donbas has affected the members of Jinjer. They were forced to flee their country in 2014 after the war began and have only returned for brief periods. One of these was in Spring 2019, Tatiana returned to her hometown of Donetsk to visit her family, only to witness a scene of war in her city. She felt a deep hatred and sadness for those responsible for turning her home into a warzone and thus, wrote the lyrics to Home Back. In the song, she compares happy and innocent things, such as mermaids singing and unicorns galloping to the tragedies of war, like a siren or soldiers’ boots. At the end of the song, she screams the words “I came back home so I want my home back” followed by the command “don’t leave us homeless”.
The lyrics of this song came about after Tatiana and Eugene were interviewed by a man who turned every question into a political topic. This angered them, seeing as the War in Donbas is a subject they feel strongly about. For days after the interview, Tatiana carried a heavy emotion and wrote Disclosure!, adding the exclamation point to make the song more aggressive. In the video, that’s exactly what one of the stars did. It portrays a police officer interrogating an innocent person (that being Tatiana) and being very aggressive with her. When he takes it too far, she turns the tables on him and gives him a taste of his own medicine. The video conveys some accurate portrayals of police brutality and aggression, problems which are very important to bring attention to. Tatiana’s reaction to the police officer can represent anger people feel when they see stories on the news regarding incidents with police. In the song, they’re even stated as a disease from TV that should not be disobeyed.
This song addresses how authority figures, primarily teachers, will be cruel and unfair to those below them in the name of a higher power. In the light of Teacher, Teacher!, the higher power is considered to be religion. The lyrics detail a nun attacking one of her students for being “sinful” and asking her God for forgiveness. This song also talks about how teachers will indoctrinate young students with false ideas because they are easily manipulated into believing them. Tatiana states that there is a hidden meaning, which is not to believe all you are told. She conveys that with the line “don’t let the school make a fool of you because the teachers may be fools too”. This addresses the fact that even though teachers tell their students ideas, they don’t even notice how wrong or foolish they are. They also may not be susceptible to change if they are proven wrong with fact.
According to Tatiana, this song is one of the most personal that Jinjer has ever written. It talks about missing your family whilst being unable to see them for circumstances beyond your control. Jinjer, being a worldwide-known band, is very frequently out touring and traveling the globe. Additionally, the War in Donbas has prevented the members from returning to Donetsk to live there full-time. They will often go for very long periods without seeing their parents. That grief combined with the love that Jinjer holds for their families sparked the lyrics for Retrospection. Tatiana stated this regarding the song: “We look at this song as an anthem to the ones who raised us, who sacrificed everything for the sake of our happiness no matter what the costs, even despite our own thankless and ingratitude towards them. The people who showed us that the purest love ever does exist – the love of the father and mother for their children. Thank you.”
This song’s meaning is a bit harder to uncover. Captain Clock talks about the most unfair of all who constantly robs you of the one thing you can’t get back: time. Tatiana describes time as a man, which would cause this to be interpreted as a leader, possibly one of a country. This would not be surprising, seeing as a lot of Jinjer’s music revolves around standing up against the atrocities of the world. Many of these can be considered to be world leaders, seeing as they will often not take the population into consideration. This could also address how leaders will try to solve problems but take too long to do so. Because of this, the problems will become even worse and possibly unable to change.
This song talks about the obvious flaws of capitalism. The song seems to focus on a person who is negatively affected by capitalism but still tries to persist nevertheless. The chorus expresses a powerful theme with the words “pour some wine into your throat, stuff your guts a little more while your avarice accumulates, the poor multiply hundredfold”. This explains how the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer, one of the stipulations of capitalism that allows it to function and gives those on the top a privilege. The song also seems to administer a threat, stating that one day this ship will sink, and everyone atop it will come falling down. Some of us can only hope Tatiana is right and that day may soon arrive.
This song symbolizes a big country and references some political events of the past, much like some of Jinjer’s other works. Tatiana recalls that Colossus was the last song for the album, and she had asked Eugene to work faster whilst writing the lyrics. She doesn’t know much of the song, other than it talks about an overarching power, though she believes it can take a human form as well. This could reference a world leader and how they hold power over what they command. The lyrics detail this Colossus, whether it be a country or a leader, commanding those beneath it to bow down so it can see what pain it has caused. Of course, it won’t do anything about it. It will just laugh and continue its treacherous ways.
