Leveraging my diverse background, I bring a unique perspective to my research and teaching. After nine years as a senior designer and project manager in architecture, overseeing the design of large-scale projects like shopping centers, universities, and hotels, I pursued a Ph.D. in Software Information Systems. This fusion of architectural expertise and UX design knowledge informs my research and teaching, particularly in the areas of embodied interaction and interactive space, where UX design and architecture converge.
Starfield Hanam is Korea’s shopping mall/culture complex mecca, constructed as a single building unit with a gross area of 459,517m2, 5 underground levels and 3 floors above ground. Although it is located on the outskirts of the city in an area with a lot of greenery, the mall was planned to be an indoors shopping mall considering Korea’s distinct four seasons. The high ceilings, clear circulation path for customers, open view structure plan and the nation’s largest skylight allow people to experience an openness unlike that of any other shopping mall. In addition, Starfield Hanam sets a new trend as a multi-functional shopping complex which not only caters to commercial functions, but also incorporates independent key tenants (mall, warehouse store), a movie theater, sports entertainment facilities and a waterpark.

Construction of the Songdo New Campus, Incheon National University, has two areas of significance. The first is that University of Incheon is becoming a national university and needs to take the opportunities that will, consequently, present themselves. The other is to present a future-oriented vision of the new campus in line with the change of the university’s research environment. The pattern of research activities in educational institutions, especially universities, undergo many changes. Research activities were performed in independent spaces of each research area. Now, new study and technology strategies are created through convergence on different areas. Therefore, Songdo New Campus concentrated on a campus layout plan and space plan in light of these demands. The campus can be utilized as a place of mutual exchange, using the Meeting Square and Promenade located in the center, and each department and college can exchange information in the shared spaces of the research rooms, laboratories, and lecture rooms. Songdo New Campus is a future-oriented campus that can respond with research activities in various areas flexibly to any possible new areas of study in the future.

CONSILIENCE: It is called “The integration of Knowledge”, and is an integrated study, which links natural science with humanities. Following the Ancient Greek philosophy, which was intended to understand the essential order of the universe through logical retrospection, two perspectives of natural science and humanities was united as one. However, since the Renaissance, academy began to be divided into many parts by the perspectives of reductionism which highlights rational reasons. However, after the times of the Modernism, the contemporary world is the times of diversity and complexity. Now, the world has been entered the era of unpredictability and we cannot interpret the world with the reductionistic academic systems of the past. This means the advent of Consilience, which is the era of integrated knowledge and comprehensive knowledge.

On the way to the era of integration and consilience, the hotel industry also takes various steps to stay ahead of the winds of change. The hotel will put on its own color by introducing a new, integrated identity, rather than simply competing to become a more luxurious hotel, it will emerge as a“ charming hotel”. It will evolve into a hotel that guests enjoy rather than one they view as just a place to stay until they move to their next destination. The finest High 1 Resort Kangwonland Hotel will overcome the negative images of a casino and embrace nature and culture to become a destination resort. To clarify the relationship between the existing Kangwonland Hotel and the new convention hotel, a huge green axis intersecting the hotel was suggested which would be completed by a complex cultural space that would be attractive to people of all ages.

There is an underground shopping mall in the crowded downtown consisting of various business zones from high-end to practical. To escape the image of the current fragmentary and familiar underpass mall, secure diversified business zones and attract customers, a remodeling of the Gangnam Station Underpass Mall to enhance its business value as a modern shopping mall was suggested. The design was focused on creating “streets”to change the mall into the one that can attract customers with various business zones, and the synergy effect of contributing to the public interest while revitalizing the mall would be added by the addition of resting spaces in the street of each business zone. An underpass mall that meets both public interest and commercial viability is suggested by adding meeting places. According to the traffic of each exit of the station, event spaces such as Therapy Hugh and Herb Plaza were planned and the remodeling of the underpass mall will allow it to contain new business zones with more diversified scenes and spaces than the existing business environments.

The site is located with the Han River to the south, which creates an open space in the city, and the green expanse of the Seoul Forest to the west, a relaxing element for the city. In the city, the new apartment complex creates a new skyline for the district north of the Han River and is close to Galleria Foret and the Daelim E-World apartment complex in Ttukseom, with the Gangbyeon Expressway to the south. The new buildings in this location should be a nature-friendly residential space to bring the flow of the Seoul Forest into the site naturally and become a new icon in the district north of the Han River. The plan started with the concept of a human living house located at the Seoul Forest and Han River. In terms of livability as a house, all of the apartment units face south and have two-way and natural ventilation. And in terms of the location - surrounded by the Han River and Seoul Forest - all units view the scenery of the Han River and embrace actively nature.

A clear purpose for the museum is to suggest a simple time capsule, which can incorporate the lamination of the reveal time. It is only the assertion from the present view. By turning this view to the future, we are suggesting a relay that can communicate with the coming future and the past by putting in our vestiges of modern times. Thus, vestiges of past and the present co exist which creates memorial monolith that leaves future mythology.
