I started getting into stop motion animation in September 2024 and instantly fell in love with it. I really like to do both fabrication and animation. I'm still learning as of now, but I'm being really ambitious and going headfirst into stop motion for my future career!! As you look through my projects you can see that the two underneath this paragraph have the same characters. The first one is a combination of two different series I'm making from, "Unrobotic Love", a stop motion centered world, and "The Legends of Dragons", a 2D animation centered world. Into a story with the two elements in mind, "Legends of the Unknown", that is mainly stop motion animated but has other art mediums and the one below is "Unrobotic Love", a sad but upbeat music video about how the character feels their emotions at the moment.
"Legends of the Unknown" is my senior thesis, which is currently in progress. It's going to be a multi-media animation with two original songs made by Kore Bowdre and me, mainly using stop motion but also other animation styles and different art mediums such as: 2D animation, wheelthrowing, linocut, maquette sculptures, and more!! The story is about a scientist and his robots meet a duo of magical heroes and their dragon from another dimension and rudely gets interrupted.
These photos show the process of me making my puppets and my set. I made three different styled puppets and an 11in x 20in lab set. I used the built-up method to make my scientist and large robot and made my smaller robot out of a gum ball capsule and used air dry clay for his hands and feet then painted him. I did however have to make a lot of different molds for my larger robot to create all of her parts. With my set, I took some inspiration from "Dexter's Laboratory" and made a lab that was unique to my scientist. I started off painting the walls and then cut up a bunch of monster cans and other pop cans and glued them onto the walls while also smashing up an old PS4 controller and projector I had and glued them on as well. I handmade the "machines" with a cooking oil bottle and water bottle tops also with leftover stuff from the things I smashed up. I bought a lot of the furniture and objects but spray-painted some and the walls to make them suit the world better. I made the lights with the remaining gumball capsules and even the big circle machine. To make the lights work, I have different colored gels on them and shine a flashlight to get the effect and I do the same with the big machine but with a wheel behind it so I can select what color I want.
Here's a sneak peek of my maquette sculptures for my senior film, "Legends of the Unknown". The ones pictured are my 2D animated characters, Sol, Rose, and Solarfare from my series "The Legend of Dragons". These will be featured at the outro of my film so keep an eye out!!
"Unrobotic Love" is an in-progress music video that will use stop motion, 2D animation, and After Effects. It started in February 2024 and is the reason for the creation of these amazing stop-motion characters. The story is about a robot in love with her creator and wants his attention, but it lies elsewhere.
Here's the final look of the puppets and even the logo of their series.
Here's some work in progress, claymation of a leader talking to his soldiers
