The Orrville Telephone exchange was in the home of the Davis family. It was across the street from McHugh’s store and the town drug store. It was next Wednesday when Jerry knocked on the side screen door at that home. Mrs. Davis knew Jerry. Everybody in Orrville knew Jerry.
“How can I help you, Jerry?” That’s the way Mrs. Davis greeting him.
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Davis. I wanted to know how I call somebody living up there in Hazen.”
“You know it’s a long-distance call. I have to charge for long-distance calls”
“Yes, ma’am. I figured that.”
“Now who are you going to be calling in Hazen?”
“Caroline Geordonia. She lives with her uncle and aunt. The Halls.”
Melinda Day smiled. “I thought that might be who. You can go out there in the hall and use our phone.”
Lillian Hall was surprised to hear the phone ringing just after she and Frank got in from prayer meeting. “Hello.”
“Hello, Lillian. This is Melinda Day. I’m calling as the telephone operator here in Orrville.
“Why hello, Melinda. Who in the world would be calling us at this time of night?”
“It’s Jerry Phillips. He’s here in our house. He wants to talk to Caroline. Can she come to the phone?”
When they were both on the phone, they talked a bit about the football game last Friday night. Eventually, Jerry asked Caroline to go to the Wilby Theater with him the next Saturday .
