Why Sports Analysis Should Separate Possession From Control

Possession is one of the most common statistics in team sports.

A team may have 60% of the ball and still lose.

That is because possession and control are not always the same thing.

For a Philippines-oriented publisher such as JLPH, sports analysis should look at what a team does with possession.

Where does the possession happen?

How many chances are created?

How often does the team enter dangerous areas?

How many turnovers lead to counterattacks?

A team can hold the ball for long periods in low-risk areas without threatening the opponent.

Another team may have less possession but create better opportunities.

The same principle applies to hockey, football and some other team sports.

Statistics need context.

For JLPH, the broader sports lesson is that possession should not automatically be described as dominance.

Control is better understood through field position, chance quality, pressure and game state.

One number can start the analysis.

It should not end it.
