Why AI Evaluation Should Include Adversarial and Edge Cases

An AI system may perform well on normal examples and still fail in unusual situations.

This is why evaluation should include more than average user requests.

An edge case may involve a very short prompt.

Conflicting instructions.

Missing context.

Unusual formatting.

Multiple languages in one request.

An adversarial case may deliberately try to confuse the system or push it outside expected behavior.

These tests can reveal weaknesses that ordinary benchmark examples miss.

For example, a summarization system may work well on clean articles but produce poor results when the document contains tables, repeated text, or contradictory statements.

A classification model may perform well on common categories but fail when content belongs partly to two topics.

Teams should document which edge cases matter for their own product.

The goal is not to test every possible input.

It is to identify failures that could realistically affect users.

Human review is also useful when automatic metrics are not enough.

A system can receive a high score while still producing outputs that are misleading, awkward, or unsafe in specific contexts.

Reliable systems are built by testing where they are most likely to fail, not only where they are already strong.
