Cindy Sherman appears to be introverted and quite reserved as a person, and as an artist. She prefers to work by herself, where no one else can judge her or make her feel self-conscious. She has her own studio that she has put together, exactly how she wants it so that way she feels perfectly comfortable.
Thanks to the world of digital art, Cindy never has to leave her homey studio. She has the ability to create her own self-portraits with her own camera and materials needed to capture her originality. She has a whole wardrobe of pieces she can use to dress herself up and express a character she is trying to make out of herself. She has a celebrity-brand, meaning her fans prefer to value and collect pieces that Cindy is clearly in. This then allows Cindy the freedom to get in front of the camera, expressing the character she is creating anyway she would like to.
Cindy Sherman kickstarted her art career through the creation of Untitled Film Stills, or planned candids (also known as “plandids”). She describes plandids as, “the newer, hotter version of the selfie on Instagram.” She stated that she personally hates selfies, but through the use and freedom of photoshop, she can change a selfie up so much that it almost doesn’t look like her. Even though she has the ability to change up her appearance a lot physically in these film stills, they are still a viable self-portrait of her, as it expresses how she prefers to be viewed, even if it takes the attention away from reality.
